The Caves of Barać 20 km away

If you haven’t noticed in browsing this site, the nation of Croatia – particularly the area around Plitvice – is filled with geological wonders. Much of this is due to the limestone makeup of Croatia’s bedrock. It has been estimated that over 50 percent of the country’s rock is composed of limestone, thus explaining the high prevalence of overall karstic formations.

The Caves of Barać, located very close to Plitvice and Rastoka, are just another very fine example of Croatia’s splendid geological blessings. These caves were an important place of habitation for prehistoric humans, and they continue to this day as places of great cultural interest, exploration, and recreation.

Today, the Caves of Barać hold a special place in the hearts of locals and tourists alike. Just a quick jaunt from the famous Plitvice Lakes, an hour-long tour of the Caves is a fantastic idea if you like to “get beneath the surface”. If nothing else, it is an excellent way to get out of the hot Croatian sun in the summertime. All kinds of “rock icicles” abound, including the ubiquitous stalactites and stalagmites. Don’t get them confused!
